Turkish Olympians, national athletes and thousands of sports fans take part in TOC’s Instagram live workout to celebrate Olympic Day 2020
Turkey’s top athletes were amongst thousands of sports enthusiasts to join the Turkish Olympic Committee’s (TOC) Instagram live workout to celebrate this year’s Olympic Day.
In line with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) COVID-19 campaign to #StayStrong, #StayActive and #StayHealthy, the TOC held a live online workout session on its Instagram feed which was conducted by some of its top athletes. These included: Olympic gymnast Ferhat Arican, canoeist Hilal Avcı, world silver medallist boxer Buse Naz Çakıroğlu, world silver medallist taekwondo athlete Hatice Kübra İlgün and world bronze medallist karateka Uğur Aktaş.
Turkey’s athletes and sports fans were amongst thousands of athletes and fans all over the globe to get active in what was the world’s largest digital Olympic workout.
As part of the workout session, Turkish athletes also held discussions with followers on ways to stay active and healthy during unprecedented times of social distancing and confinement. Athletes also underlined the positive impact sport can have on people’s mental and physical wellbeing.
Fans taking part in the workout were also given to opportunity to participate in a Q&A session with the athletes and were awarded surprise gifts for correctly answering questions posed by Ferhat Arıcan, who moderated the session.
Olympic Day is a global celebration of the Olympic Movement which seeks to promote fitness, wellbeing, culture and education through the three Olympic Day pillars – move, learn and discover.
The TOC has been celebrating Olympic Day for many years in order to spread the Olympic values across Turkey. Over the years, tens of thousands of children have taken part in Olympic Day celebrations which have featured some of Turkey’s most famous Olympians.
TOC staff take part in workout
Dressed in fitness gear and Olympic Day t-shirts, TOC’s staff gathered in a large conference room, where social distancing could be observed, and took part in the workout session to celebrate Olympic Day 2020.
TOC launches new digital platform to promote Olympism
On Olympic Day 2020, the TOC also launched a new digital platform called ‘Future Olympians’ (olimpikgelecegimiz.olimpiyat.org.tr). The online portal seeks to promote the Olympic Games, Olympic sports as well as encouraging children and the younger generations to lead a healthier and more active lifestyle centred around sport.
The portal features content which has been curated under the guidance of academics, teachers and sports professionals. It is designed to encourage young people in Turkey to embrace Olympic values and sports culture through digital.
