The Turkish Olympic Committee (TOC) today teamed up with the Izimir Metropolitan Municipality and Izmir Provincial Directorate of Youth and Sports to celebrate Olympic Day with 200 children, their families and athletes.
The celebration took part at the Izmir Aşık Veysel Recreation Area and saw children practice a variety of Olympic sports including athletics, judo, table tennis and archery. Children were guided by professional coaches and athletes who taught them the different elements of each sport.
Olympic Day, which is based the three pillars of “move”, “learn” and “discover”, is celebrated on 23 June around the world by National Olympic Committees and other stakeholders from the Olympic Movement with the aim of encouraging sport and promoting Olympic values.
All activities took place outdoor and followed the COVID-19 protocols set out by Turkey’s public health authorities, such as maintaining social distance and hand sanitising.
TOC Board Member and Sports Culture and Olympic Education Commission Chairman Seyit Bilal Porsun, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Secretary General Ertuğrul Tugay and İzmir Youth and Sports Provincial Directorate Sports Branch Manager Bahadır Eroğlu were all in attendance as the children enjoyed a fun day full of sport.
Speaking on the success of the event, Seyit Bilal Porsun said
: “Olympic Day is an excellent way to introduce our children to Olympic sports and enable them to adopt Olympic values. We are delighted to have been able to celebrate Olympic Day, which is celebrated all around the world, with lots of enthusiasm in İzmir together with our children.”
